    Please join us for an upcoming talk on Dec 03, 4-5 pm (Eastern Time) by Mohammad Abdolrazzaghi titled "Advances in Microwave Planar Sensors Using Active Circuitry", as part of the 2020-2021 IEEE AP-S seminar series. Abstract: Nowadays, electromagnetism (EM) is being extensively investigated as a leading technology on noninvasive sensing. EM sensors make use of metallic elements, including split-ring resonators (SRRs) and complementary SRRs, to both radiate or receive EM waves. Using EM sensors to monitor changes in a medium, e.g. human body, is based on interrogation of a medium with EM waves that reveals valuable information about its properties. EM-based technologies enable compact, low-profile, yet highly sensitive sensors for cutting-edge sensors. In this talk, a variety of microwave planar sensors will be presented that exhibit high sensitivity for material characterization, focusing on high-performance sensors aided with active circuitry. Emerging technologies such as machine learning will be introduced that enhances the sensor robustness. Last, the potential capabilities of the microwave sensors in microwave and mm-wave frequencies will be discussed to conclude the talk. Speaker: Mohammad Abdolrazzaghi received the B.Sc. degree from the Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2009, and M.Sc. degree from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB, Canada, in 2017, all in electrical and computer engineering. He then became involved as a research assistant of Microwave and Millimeter Wave Lab (M2M) at the University of Alberta and Electromagnetics Lead at the Phase Advanced Sensors Corp. in Edmonton, AB. He joined University of Toronto community in 2020 as a PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. His research interest includes: Analog Circuit Design, RF Circuits and Microwave Active Sensors, Machine learning, Wireless Power Transfer, and Phased Arrays. He was awarded Alberta Innovates Technology Futures (AITF) Scholarship from University of Alberta (2015), got the first place in for CMC Microsystems’s National Research Council Industrial Collaboration Award in 2015, and Ontario Graduate Scholarship (2021).   • Generative Adversarial Networks: Used for understanding and producing a random data item

    Prerequisites: You do not need to have attended the earlier talks. If you know zero math and zero machine learning, then this talk is for you. Jeff will do his best to explain fairly hard mathematics to you. If you know a bunch of math and/or a bunch machine learning, then these talks are for you. Jeff tries to spin the ideas in new ways. Longer Abstract: Suppose you have a distributions of random images of cats. Suppose you want to learn a neural network that takes uniformly random bits as input and outputs an image of a cat according to this same distribution. One fun thing is that this neural network won't be perfect and hence it will output images of "cats" that it has never seen before. Also you can make small changes in the network input bits and see how it changes the resulting image of a cat. The way we do this is with Generative Adversarial Networks. This is formed by having two competing agents. The task of the first agent, as described above, is to output random images of cats. The task of the second is to discern whether a given image was produced by the true random distribution or by the first agent. By competing, they learn. If we have more time in the talk then we will talk about Convolutional & Recurrent Networks which are used for learning images and sound that are invariant over location and time.     Please join us for an upcoming talk on Feb 07, 4-5 pm (Eastern Time) by Prof. Erik Lier titled "Practical Antenna Solutions Enabled by Soft and Hard EM Surfaces and Metasurfaces", as part of the 2021-2022 IEEE AP-S seminar series. Abstract: The presentation will describe how the concept of electromagnetically soft and hard surfaces and later metamaterial horns (metahorns) came about. The talk will also discuss practical antenna solutions enabled by these EM techniques, as well as future opportunities and challenges in antenna and RF designs. About Speaker: Dr. Erik Lier received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway. He started working as a university scientific assistant and later as a research scientist at the Electronics Laboratory (ELAB/SINTEF) at the university, carrying out national and international research on microwave antennas and feed components for the European Space Agency (ESA), INTELSAT, INMARSAT and other satellite organizations and radar companies. He spent a year at UCLA as a visiting scholar studying phased array antenna technology. He co-invented the concept of “Soft and Hard electromagnetic surfaces” which is related to the field of electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures and complex surfaces. Since 1990 he has been with Lockheed Martin Space, where he has been involved in developing new spacecraft antenna and payload technology. He was instrumental in building up shaped reflector capability in the company which resulted in winning the Asiasat-2 satellite program. He has been involved in the development and modernization of the GPS satellite payload for over more than 20 years. His main research interest and contribution has been in the field of phased array antennas, including design, analysis, system engineering, calibration and test. He was the phased array architect for two phased arrays launched into space. He headed up the internal metamaterials research collaboration effort within the company, which has included university collaboration and has led to several groundbreaking and practical metamaterial-enhanced antennas for space and ground applications. He is granted 37 US patents, has authored and co-authored over 140 journal and conference papers, including two papers in the journal Nature, co-authored one book and authored a book chapter. He received the 2014 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Harold A. Wheeler Applications Prize Paper Award. He is a Lockheed Martin Senior Technical Fellow, a Life Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of IET.     Reliability is a main design prerequisite in public transportation systems. This talk will address the governing parameters for a successful reliable propulsion system. Also, the system is not only required to be reliable but most importantly safe. Those considerations will highlight the power electronics' components design. The talk will address how to combine safety and reliability into the design phase of any propulsion system. A case study will present the propulsion design of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Vehicles. All pertaining design requirements will be verified towards the welfare of a successful deployment of the LRT project in Toronto.
