Biography
Sunila is an Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream) at York University and a Visiting Researcher
at the University of Toronto since July 2024. Previously, she worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow and
an Instructor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of
Toronto from October 2021. She earned her Ph.D. from King’s College London, UK, in 2018,
under the prestigious Commonwealth Scholarship, UK.
With nearly two decades of experience spanning academia and industry, and a career shaped by
working in four cosmopolitan cities, Sunila brings a rich and diverse set of skills and expertise in
Electrical, Electronic, and Telecommunications Engineering. Her current research focuses on
Adaptive Radar Resource Management, leveraging deep reinforcement learning to optimize
multifunction radar systems for enhanced performance and efficiency. Her broader research
interests include machine-learning-driven optimization and the statistical modeling, analysis, and
design of spectral and energy-efficient wireless networks. Sunila has published multiple papers in
leading IEEE journals and conferences and has actively contributed to the academic community
as a reviewer for several IEEE venues. Since June 2022, she has been serving as an Associate
Editor for the IEEE Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She is a Senior
Member of IEEE, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK, a licensed Professional
Engineer in Ontario, Canada, and a Professional Member of the Pakistan Engineering Council.
Sunila is deeply committed to advancing research and education in Electrical and Computer
Engineering. Her teaching philosophy centers on inclusive, example-based learning that connects
theoretical concepts to real-world applications. She strives to create engaging, student-centered
learning environments that cultivate critical thinking and the technical skills essential for the next
generation of engineers.
