Biography
He obtained his doctoral degree in Power Electronics in 1977 from Bradford University, UK.
From 1969-76, he was employed at the Railway Technical Centre, Derby, UK. From 1976-2007, he was a Senior Researcher at IREQ (Hydro-Québec) in Montreal, Canada. In 2007, he joined Ontario Tech University in Oshawa, Ontario where he is presently an Associate Professor.
He is a registered Professional Engineer, a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (2006), and a Fellow of the Engineering Institute of Canada (1999) and Emeritus Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineers (2010). He is the recipient of the following awards: 1998 Outstanding Service Award from IEEE Canada and the 1999 Meritas Award from the Ordre des ingènieurs du Québec, IEEE Third Millennium Award (2000), IEEE Regional Activities Board Achievement Award (2001), CP Railway Engineering Medal, from Engineering Institute of Canada (2002). He was the Managing Editor of the IEEE Canadian Review (a quarterly journal for IEEE Canada) from 1996-2006, and the Editor for the Canadian Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He served as a Director of IEEE Canadian Foundation until 2012. He also served as an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery for two terms.
Dr. Sood has expertise in HVDC Transmission systems and flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and their controllers. His research focuses on the monitoring, control, and protection of power systems and on the integration of renewable energy systems into the smart grid.
Dr. Sood has published over 44 Journal papers, 115 Conference papers, and authored two text books on High Voltage DC Transmission, and numerous other book chapters.
