Biography

Michael Zara received his B.Eng in Biomedical Engineering from Ryerson University, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and is currently pursuing his MASc in Biomedical Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Sri Krishnan at Ryerson University.

Michael’s current research is associated with the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Science, and Technology (iBEST), which is a partnership between Ryerson University and St. Michael’s Hospital. Through iBEST, Michael has connected with doctors and clinical researchers in the area of critical care medicine. His work applies signal decomposition methods to denoise and analyze biomedical signals obtained from mechanically ventilated patients. The aim of his research work is to help clinicians better understand the respiratory mechanics in critical illness, as well as the interactions between mechanical ventilation and patients to improve treatment options.

Aside from his research and technical interests, Michael is passionate about connecting people from different research and professional backgrounds in order to form unconventional partnerships. His hope is that these multi-disciplinary collaborative teams create interesting solutions to overcome challenges in different domains.
