SUMMARY:Algebra Review: How does one best think about all of these numbers
DESCRIPTION:— Prerequisites —  You do not need to have attended the earlier talks. If you know zero math and zero machine learning\, then this talk is for you. Jeff will do his best to explain fairly hard mathematics to you. If you know a bunch of math and/or a bunch machine learning\, then these talks are for you. Jeff tries to spin the ideas in new ways.  — Longer Abstract —  An input data item\, eg a image of a cat\, is just a large tuple of real values. As such it can be thought as a point in some high dimensional vector space. Whether the image is of a cat or a dog partitions this vector space into regions. Classifying your image amounts to knowing which region the corresponding point is in. The dot product of two vectors tell us: whether our data scaled by coefficients meets a threshold; how much two lists of properties correlate; the cosine of the angle between to directions; and which side of a hyperplane your points is on. A novice reading a machine learning paper might not get that many of the symbols are not real numbers but are matrices. Hence the product of two such symbols is matrix multiplication. Computing the output of your current neural network on each of your training data items amounts to an alternation of such a matrix multiplications and of some non-linear rounding of your numbers to be closer to being 0-1 valued. Similarly\, back propagation computes the direction of steepest decent using a similar alternation\, except backwards. The matrix way of thinking about a neural network also helps us understand how a neural network effectively performs a sequence linear and non-linear transformations changing the representation of our input until the representation is one for which the answer can be determined based which side of a hyperplane your point is on. Though people say that it is “obvious”\, it was never clear to me which direction to head to get the steepest decent. SUMMARY:Recent Advances in Converter Control Techniques for Wind Energy Conversion System
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few decades wind energy has emerged as one of the fastest growing mainstream power technologies due to its low cost and environmentally friendly nature compared to conventional fossil fuel based power generation. Considering available options of state-of-the-art generator technologies in wind energy conversion system (WECS)\, doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) has become popular because of its economic operation\, ability to regulate in sub-synchronous or super-synchronous speed and decoupled control of active and reactive power. Harnessing regulated power supply from unpredictable wind blow\, extraction of maximum power from intermittent generation and supervision on nonlinear system dynamics of DFIG-WECS are some of the critically challenging issues for wind energy system. Maximization of the power yielded from wind turbine is possible by optimizing tip-speed ratio\, turbine rotor speed or torque and blade angle. Traditionally\, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control algorithm is based on the Hill Climb Search (HCS) method due to its simple implementation and turbine parameter-independent scheme. Since the conventional HCS algorithm has few drawbacks such as power fluctuation and speed-efficiency trade-off\, a new adaptive step size based HCS controller is developed in this work to mitigate its deficiencies by incorporating wind speed measurement in the controller. Again\, conventional feedback linearization controllers are sensitive to system parameter variations and disturbances on grid-connected WECS\, which demands advanced control techniques for stable and efficient performance considering the nonlinear system dynamics. An adaptive backstepping based nonlinear control (ABNC) scheme with iron-loss minimization algorithm for DFIG is also developed in this work to obtain both improved dynamic performance and reduced power loss.  In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control schemes\, simulation models are designed using Matlab/Simulink. The proposed MPPT control\, nonlinear control for grid-connected mode of DFIG-WECS has been successfully implemented in real-time using DSP controller board DS1104 for a laboratory 350 W DFIG. In the laboratory environment a 4-quadrant dynamometer is used to emulate the wind turbine to provide variable wind speed to the generator. The performance of the proposed ABNC is also compared with the benchmark tuned proportional-integral (PI) controller under different operating conditions such variable wind speed\, grid voltage disturbance and parameter uncertainties and it exhibits excellent grip over the rotor side and grid side converter control. SUMMARY:Terahertz Days: The role of Directional Terahertz Communications in the 6G era: Usage scenarios\, system concepts\, promises and challenges
DESCRIPTION:The exploitation of the THz band is expected to catalyze 6G applications\, as a solution to both wireless backhaul and fronthaul\, and integrated backhaul/fronthaul applications. However\, the utilization of THz wireless technologies comes with several challenges\, mainly associated with the very high propagation losses in the THz regime\, which require the utilization of high-gain directional antennas with strict beam alignment requirements\, and with challenging blockage scenarios\, which call for intelligent beam steering and blockage avoidance based medium access and resource allocation.  In this talk\, we first discuss critical usage scenarios and significant technology pillars defining the THz Wireless system concept. Then\, a quantitative assessment of intelligent pencil beamforming wireless access technologies is presented\, along with the impact of beam misalignment and blockage. Finally\, the benefits of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces are reported and their expected role in future THz wireless systems is discussed. If you know a bunch of math and/or a bunch machine learning\, then these talks are for you. Jeff tries to spin the ideas in new ways. Abstract: Computers can now drive cars and find cancer in x-rays. For better or worse\, this will change the world (and the job market). Strangely designing these algorithms is not done by telling the computer what to do or even by understanding what the computer does. The computers learn themselves from lots and lots of data and lots of trial and error. This learning process is more analogous to how brains evolved over billions of years of learning. The machine itself is a neural network which models both the brain and silicon and-or-not circuits\, both of which are great for computing. The only difference with neural networks is that what they compute is determined by weights and small changes in these weights give you small changes in the result of the computation. The process for finding an optimal setting of these weights is analogous to finding the bottom of a valley. “Gradient Decent” achieves this by using the local slope of the hill (derivatives) to direct the travel down the hill\, i.e. small changes to the weights. SUMMARY:IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Distinguished Lecture - Prof. Levent Sevgi
DESCRIPTION:EM diffraction is critical in many applications including antennas and propagation. Understanding and visualizing EM wave – object interaction is crucial in designing new antenna systems\, in predicting path losses through complex propagation paths\, etc. In order to do that wave pieces such as diffracted waves\, Fringe waves\, etc.\, should first be studied on canonical structures. Then\, complex objects can be investigated by using HFA as well as numerical methods in hybrid form intelligently.  EM wave scattering from waves – objects interaction has long been investigated. Interesting wave phenomena\, diffraction\, occur when objects have sharp edges and tips. Methods known as High Frequency Asymptotics\, such as Geometric optics (GO)\, Physical Optics\, (PO)\, Geometrical Theory of Diffraction\, (GTD)\, Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD)\, Physical Theory of Diffraction (PTD) and Theory of Edge Diffraction (TED) have been successfully applied to variety of EM problems. Recently\, numerical methods\, such as Finite Difference time Domain (FDTD)\, Method of Moments (MoM) and Finite Element Method (FEM) have also been used in modeling EM diffraction. These powerful methods\, together with novel approaches\, have shown to be successful not only in modeling EM diffraction but also in distinguishing wave pieces such as scattered waves\, diffracted waves\, Fringe waves\, etc.\, which is very important in visualizing and understanding complex wave – object interaction.  This talk will review all these approaches\, use recently developed EM virtual tools and present comparisons through canonical examples. On the other hand\, many existing security protocols are infeasible to apply because of high resource consumption. Containers are a method of providing added security through virtualization. SUMMARY:Integrated Access and Backhaul for 5G and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Note: Virtual platform will be delivered to registrants a couple of hours before starting the event. \nContact: IEEE Montreal Section Young Professionals \nAbstract: The number of devices requesting for wireless communications is growing exponentially. Network densification via the deployment of many base stations (BSs) of different types is one of the mechanisms that can be employed to satisfy the ever-increasing demand for bandwidth/capacity in wireless networks. However\, deploying fiber to the small cells may be expensive and impractical when the number of small cells increases. For this reason\, as well as because of the traffic jams and infrastructure displacements caused by fiber optic installation\, millimeter wave (mmw)-based wireless backhaul is currently considered as an alternative\, providing (almost) the same rate as fiber optic with significantly less price and no digging. With this background\, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) networks\, where the operator can utilize part of the radio resources for wireless backhauling\, has recently received considerable attention. The purpose of IAB is to replace existing backhaul systems with flexible wireless backhaul using the existing 3GPP bands providing not only backhaul but also existing cellular services in the same node. This creates more flexibility and reduces the implementation cost. For 5G NR\, IAB is currently considered as a work item in 3GPP\, and it is known as one of the main novelties of 5G. In this talk\, we review the main backhauling techniques\, and present the main motivations/standardization agreements on IAB. Moreover\, We present comparisons between the IAB networks and the cases where all or part of the small access points are fiber-connected. Finally\, we study the robustness of IAB networks to environmental effects and verify the effect of the blockage\, the tree foliage\, the rain as well as the antenna height/gain on the coverage rate of IAB setups\, as the key differences between the fiber-connected and IAB networks. As we show\, IAB is an attractive setup enabling 5G and beyond.

SUMMARY:Sustainable Service Pricing in Cloud Ecosystems
DESCRIPTION:Energy efficiency\, which has emerged as a top priority in cloud ecosystems\, is the outcome of appropriate pricing mechanisms and resource allocations. Static pricing mechanisms are the most dominant approach among all the others. They are simple to implement for the service providers and easy to understand for the service users. Inaccurate price calculation and low efficient resource allocation in static pricing mechanisms made researchers discover other solutions to overcome these issues. Double auction mechanisms are among the most appropriate dynamic models. The main challenge of conventional double auction mechanisms is not considering the cloud ecosystems’ specifications\, such as dynamic online features. The term dynamic refers to the many variable parameters in cloud ecosystems\, and they constantly change. Conventional static offline pricing solutions are set based on a series of parameters before running the process. In dynamic online methods\, we customize our pricing models based on dynamic and current parameters. Also\, we continuously optimize these methods to attain optimal results. In this seminar\, firstly\, we define a Dynamic Online Double Auction Mechanism (DODAM) for the IaaS environment\, which covers a broader range of IaaS parameters by considering the dynamic online features of such markets. Considering the features of cloud dynamic online ecosystems\, DODAM provides an appropriate price scheduling for service providers and service users. Cloud secondary market is a new paradigm in IaaS ecosystems. In these markets\, brokers and reseller buyers have attained their resources from service providers of the cloud primary markets in the form of timed packages and repackage them into smaller chunks. As unsold packages do not transfer to the next intervals\, brokers and reseller buyers need to sell their packages as much as possible. We develop a mechanical design that includes a market-based pricing model and a resource allocation algorithm in such markets as our second contribution. Next\, by formulating the inherent competitive features in cloud secondary markets\, we improve the pricing and resource allocation mechanisms in such competitive ecosystems. In the last contribution\, we proposed a Priority-based Dynamic Online Double Auction Model (PB-DODAM)\, considering the perishability and time constraints of traded resources in IaaS secondary markets.
