SUMMARY:Computation Offloading and Task Scheduling at Network Edge
DESCRIPTION:In the 5G era\, wireless networks are anticipated to provide connectivity for massive mobile devices and to enable a variety of innovative applications\, which generate enormous computing service demands with diverse and stringent Quality of Service requirements. To support the emerging computing service demands\, Mobile Edge Computing (MEC)\, as a cutting-edge technology in 5G\, utilizes computing resources on the network edge to provide computing services for mobile devices within a radio access network. In this talk\, we will investigate computing resource management for MEC to satisfy diverse computing requirements in wireless networks. We will introduce three computation offloading and task scheduling schemes tailored for supporting representative use cases and network scenarios in 5G\, including autonomous driving\, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) assisted networks\, and highly dense vehicular networks. Machine learning algorithms are applied to facilitate low-latency and reliable computing services in complex and dynamic network environments. \nSpeaker(s): Mushu Li \nBiography: Dr. Mushu Li received the Ph.D. degree from the University of Waterloo\, ON\, Canada\, in 2021\, and the M.A.Sc. degree from Ryerson University\, Toronto\, ON\, Canada\, in 2017. She is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering\, University of Waterloo.  Dr. Li was a recipient of the NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship (2018-2021) and Ontario Graduate Scholarship in 2015 and 2016\, respectively. SUMMARY:Fast Solvers for Electromagnetics-Based Analysis and Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems
DESCRIPTION:The design of advanced integrated circuits and microsystems from zero to terahertz frequencies calls for fast and accurate electromagnetics-based modeling and simulation. The sheer complexity and high design cost associated with the integrated circuits and microsystems prevent one from designing them based on hand calculation\, approximation\, intuition\, or trial and error. The move towards higher frequencies and heterogeneous technologies stresses the need even more. \nHowever\, the analysis and design of integrated circuits (ICs) and microsystems impose many unique challenges on electromagnetic analysis such as exponentially increased problem size and extremely multiscaled system spanning from nano- to centi-meter scales. These challenges become new driving forces of the advancement of Computational Electromagnetics (CEM) in recent years\, since past techniques do not address them well. \nIn this talk\, recent advances in fast direct solvers of O(N) (optimal) complexity will be presented\, including both direct PDE and IE solvers\, for addressing the ultra large problem size encountered in the IC design problems. In these solvers\, the underlying dense or sparse system matrix is directly inverted or factorized in O(N) complexity. To show how these solvers work\, a series of new accuracy controlled fast matrix arithmetic will be elaborated including the representation of a dense matrix of O(N2) elements using O(N) parameters with controlled accuracy\, subsequent matrix-matrix multiplication\, matrix factorization\, and inversion performed in O(N) complexity with directly controlled accuracy. The application of these fast algorithms to the design and analysis of industry product-level integrated circuits and systems will be presented. Comparisons with direct and iterative solvers in the past will be made\, which demonstrate the clear advantages of the new O(N) direct solvers. \nCo-sponsored by: Center for Computational Science and Engineering (CCSE)\, Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering\, University of Toronto \nSpeaker(s): Dan Jiao \nBiography: \n \nDan Jiao received the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign\, Urbana\, IL\, USA\, in 2001. She then joined the Technology Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Division\, Intel Corporation\, until September 2005\, where she was a Senior CAD Engineer\, Staff Engineer\, and Senior Staff Engineer. In September 2005\, she joined Purdue University\, West Lafayette\, IN\, USA\, as an Assistant Professor with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She is currently a Professor with Purdue University. She has authored 3 book chapters and over 300 papers in refereed journals and international conferences. Her current research interests include computational electromagnetics; high-frequency digital\, analog\, mixed-signal\, and RF integrated circuit (IC) design and analysis; high-performance very large scale integration (VLSI) CAD; modeling of microscale and nanoscale circuits; applied electromagnetics; fast and high-capacity numerical methods; fast time-domain analysis\, scattering and antenna analysis; RF\, microwave\, and millimeter-wave circuits; wireless communication; and bioelectromagnetics. \nDr. Jiao has served as a reviewer for many IEEE publications and conferences. She is an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Components\, Packaging\, and Manufacturing Technology. She was the recipient of the 2013 S. A. Schelkunoff Prize Paper Award of the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society\, which recognizes the Best Paper published in the IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation during the previous year. She has been named a University Faculty Scholar by Purdue University since 2013. She was among the 85 engineers selected throughout the nation for the National Academy of Engineerings 2011 U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium. SUMMARY:Practical Antenna Solutions Enabled by Soft and Hard EM Surfaces and Metasurfaces by Prof. Erik Lier
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an upcoming talk on Feb 07\, 4-5 pm (Eastern Time) by Prof. Erik Lier titled “Practical Antenna Solutions Enabled by Soft and Hard EM Surfaces and Metasurfaces”\, as part of the 2021-2022 IEEE AP-S seminar series. \nAbstract: The presentation will describe how the concept of electromagnetically soft and hard surfaces and later metamaterial horns (metahorns) came about. The talk will also discuss practical antenna solutions enabled by these EM techniques\, as well as future opportunities and challenges in antenna and RF designs. \nAbout Speaker: Dr. Erik Lier received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology\, Trondheim\, Norway. He started working as a university scientific assistant and later as a research scientist at the Electronics Laboratory (ELAB/SINTEF) at the university\, carrying out national and international research on microwave antennas and feed components for the European Space Agency (ESA)\, INTELSAT\, INMARSAT and other satellite organizations and radar companies. He spent a year at UCLA as a visiting scholar studying phased array antenna technology. He co-invented the concept of “Soft and Hard electromagnetic surfaces” which is related to the field of electromagnetic bandgap (EBG) structures and complex surfaces. Since 1990 he has been with Lockheed Martin Space\, where he has been involved in developing new spacecraft antenna and payload technology. He was instrumental in building up shaped reflector capability in the company which resulted in winning the Asiasat-2 satellite program. He has been involved in the development and modernization of the GPS satellite payload for over more than 20 years. His main research interest and contribution has been in the field of phased array antennas\, including design\, analysis\, system engineering\, calibration and test. He was the phased array architect for two phased arrays launched into space. He headed up the internal metamaterials research collaboration effort within the company\, which has included university collaboration and has led to several groundbreaking and practical metamaterial-enhanced antennas for space and ground applications. He is granted 37 US patents\, has authored and co-authored over 140 journal and conference papers\, including two papers in the journal Nature\, co-authored one book and authored a book chapter. He received the 2014 IEEE Antennas and Propagation Harold A. Wheeler Applications Prize Paper Award. DESCRIPTION:Internet is the baseline for cyberspace\, where technology infrastructure can be autonomous. It is a virtual space that can be accessed via different interconnected network devices. Cyber-security can be described as a set of measures that makes cyberspace safe. Identifying threats and predicting vulnerabilities in this environment are the key components of the security mechanism. The main cause of security violations is the intrusion of an attacker into the network or electronic devices. Machine learning can be used to increase the accuracy level of detection of threats to improve system efficiency and performance. DESCRIPTION:Prerequisites: You do not need to have attended the earlier talks. If you know zero math and zero machine learning\, then this talk is for you. Jeff will do his best to explain fairly hard mathematics to you. If you know a bunch of math and/or a bunch machine learning\, then these talks are for you. Jeff tries to spin the ideas in new ways. \nLonger Abstract: Suppose you have a distributions of random images of cats. Suppose you want to learn a neural network that takes uniformly random bits as input and outputs an image of a cat according to this same distribution. One fun thing is that this neural network won’t be perfect and hence it will output images of “cats” that it has never seen before. Also you can make small changes in the network input bits and see how it changes the resulting image of a cat. The way we do this is with Generative Adversarial Networks. This is formed by having two competing agents. The task of the first agent\, as described above\, is to output random images of cats. The task of the second is to discern whether a given image was produced by the true random distribution or by the first agent. By competing\, they learn. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for an upcoming talk on Dec 03\, 4-5 pm (Eastern Time) by Mohammad Abdolrazzaghi titled “Advances in Microwave Planar Sensors Using Active Circuitry”\, as part of the 2020-2021 IEEE AP-S seminar series. \nAbstract: Nowadays\, electromagnetism (EM) is being extensively investigated as a leading technology on noninvasive sensing. EM sensors make use of metallic elements\, including split-ring resonators (SRRs) and complementary SRRs\, to both radiate or receive EM waves. Using EM sensors to monitor changes in a medium\, e.g. human body\, is based on interrogation of a medium with EM waves that reveals valuable information about its properties. EM-based technologies enable compact\, low-profile\, yet highly sensitive sensors for cutting-edge sensors. In this talk\, a variety of microwave planar sensors will be presented that exhibit high sensitivity for material characterization\, focusing on high-performance sensors aided with active circuitry. Emerging technologies such as machine learning will be introduced that enhances the sensor robustness. Last\, the potential capabilities of the microwave sensors in microwave and mm-wave frequencies will be discussed to conclude the talk. \nSpeaker: Mohammad Abdolrazzaghi received the B.Sc. degree from the Iran University of Science and Technology\, Tehran\, Iran\, in 2009\, and M.Sc. degree from the University of Alberta\, Edmonton\, AB\, Canada\, in 2017\, all in electrical and computer engineering. He then became involved as a research assistant of Microwave and Millimeter Wave Lab (M2M) at the University of Alberta and Electromagnetics Lead at the Phase Advanced Sensors Corp. in Edmonton\, AB. He joined University of Toronto community in 2020 as a PhD student in Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. His research interest includes: Analog Circuit Design\, RF Circuits and Microwave Active Sensors\, Machine learning\, Wireless Power Transfer\, and Phased Arrays. Jeff will do his best to explain fairly hard mathematics to you. If you know a bunch of math and/or a bunch machine learning\, then these talks are for you. Jeff tries to spin the ideas in new ways. Longer Abstract: A randomly chosen bit string cannot be compressed at all. But if there is a pattern to it\, eg it represents an image\, then maybe it can be compressed. Each pixel of an image is specified by one (or three) real numbers. If an image has thousands/millions of pixels\, then each of these acts as a coordinate of the point where the image sits in a very high dimensional space. A set of such images then corresponds to a set of these points. We can understand the pattern of points/images as follows. Maximum Likelihood assumes that the given set of points/images were randomly chosen according a multi-dimensional normal distribution and then adjusts the parameters of this normal distribution in the way that maximizes the probability of getting the images that we have. The obtained parameters effectively fits an ellipse around the points/images in this high dimensional space. We then reduce the number of dimensions in our space by collapsing this ellipse along its least significant axises. Longer Abstract: At the risk of being non-standard\, Jeff will tell you the way he thinks about this topic. Both “Game Trees” and “Markoff Chains” represent the graph of states through which your agent will traverse a path while completing the task. Suppose we could learn for each such state a value measuring “how good” this state is for the agent. Then competing the task in an optimal way would be easy. If our current state is one within which our agent gets to choose the next action\, then she will choose the action that maximizes the value of our next state. On the other hand\, if our adversary gets to choose\, he will choose the action that minimizes this value. Finally\, if our current state is one within which the universe flips a coin\, then each edge leaving this state will be labeled with the probability of taking it. Knowing that that is how the game is played\, we can compute how good each state is. The states in which the task is complete is worth whatever reward the agent receives in the said state. These values somehow trickle backwards until we learn the value of the start state. The computational challenge is that there are way more states then we can ever look at. SUMMARY:3GPP Standards for 5G New Radio: from Release 15 and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Event to introduce the 3GPP standardization process and discuss the existing and future specifications for 5G New Radio.  The fifth and latest generation of cellular mobile communication protocols (5G) is meant to address use cases well beyond the next decade. The first set of technical specifications for 5G\, also referred to as “New Radio” or NR in 3GPP\, were completed as part of 3GPP Release 15. The standardization work for 5G NR continues and new features are continuously added to address more advanced use cases and verticals. This presentation will provide an overview of the standardization process in 3GPP and an overview of the technical features for Release 16 and Release 17 of the specifications. DESCRIPTION:Prerequisites: You do not need to have attended the earlier talks. If you know zero math and zero machine learning\, then this talk is for you. Jeff will do his best to explain fairly hard mathematics to you. If you know a bunch of math and/or a bunch machine learning\, then these talks are for you. Jeff tries to spin the ideas in new ways. Longer Abstract: There is some theory. If a machine is found that gives the correct answers on the randomly chosen training data without simply memorizing\, then we can prove that with high probability this same machine will also work well on never seen before instances drawn from the same distribution. The easy proof requires D>m\, where m is the number of bits needed to describe your learned machine and D is the number of train data items. A much harder proof (which we likely won’t cover) requires only D>VC\, where VC is VC-dimension (Vapnikâ€“Chervonenkis) of your machine. The second requirement is easier to meet because VC<m. SUMMARY:Accenture presents Zero Trust: A journey from theory to tactical application
DESCRIPTION:IEEE Canada Region and IEEE Toronto Section Industry Engagement Committees are pleased to announce that there will be a Cybersecurity Lunch Talk Series in collaboration with Accenture. We will kick this off with this talk titled “Zero Trust: A journey from theory to tactical application”.  Classic perimeter/defense-in-depth cybersecurity strategies are quickly becoming obsolete when protecting against well-resourced adversaries\, and not efficient when addressing insider threats. On May 12 this year\, the Biden administration issued an ‘Executive Order on improving the nation’s cybersecurity’ which made clear the need for “bold changes and significant investments” in order to defend both IT and OT across our vital institutions\, including advancing towards a ‘Zero Trust Architecture’. During the same month\, the Canadian Government recognized that in light of emerging trends in the industry and the strategic direction of the government to support user access from any device at any time\, a new security paradigm is required. That paradigm is Zero Trust Architecture (ZTA). This new approach renounces any implied trust (of users or location)\, assumes hostility within the network\, replaces the dated ideas of security based on physical location\, and moves to a dynamic user/device/application policy driven model. Contrary to previous paradigms\, Zero Trust embeds security throughout the architecture to prevent malicious personas from accessing our most critical assets. The challenge remains for many institutions to define what Zero Trust actually means for them and moreover the difficulty of articulating what tactical steps should be taken to achieve the goals or Zero Trust is a roadblock to many institutions from embarking on a Zero Trust journey.
